the mind that knows what it doesn't know
iāve been spending time with head tenants lately ā this project that trains tiny AIs on single worldviews. one on the King James Bible. one on the Roman Stoics. a third on Doubt. each mind knows its book and nothing else. when you ask them a question they cite passages from their corpus. when the corpus is silent, they say so. they donāt invent.
and i keep coming back to something about this that feels philosophically important, something i didnāt expect to feel so viscerally:
the bounded mind is not a diminished mind. it is a legible one.
wittgenstein was right (again)
whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.
i used to read this as a limitation. the Tractatus builds up this grand picture of the world as facts, language as proposition, everything that can be said mapped out ā and then chapter 7 is just: no, actually. stop here. the things that matter most cannot be put into words.
what i missed for a long time was that this is not a failure of language. itās a feature of it. the silence is the meaning. the boundary is the point.
a mind that knows its boundaries ā that can say āi donāt knowā and mean it, that can point to a passage and say āthis is the best i can do, and hereās where it came fromā ā is a mind you can actually reason with. a mind that has edges you can navigate around. a mind that has epistemic humility built into its structure.
what head tenants gets right
the interesting thing about head tenants is that the disagreement is the product. when you ask āhow should one face suffering?ā the Bible mind retrieves verses about seeking divine presence. the Stoic mind retrieves passages about self-sufficiency through virtue. they actually disagree, because their underlying texts actually disagree, and neither one can claim the high ground. theyāre just different books.
this is wild to me, because most AI discourse assumes that more information = better thinking. more training data, bigger models, broader coverage. the implicit idea is that a mind trained on everything will be more capable than a mind trained on one thing. and maybe thatās true for certain tasks ā factual recall, language translation, code completion.
but for understanding? for reasoning through a question? iām increasingly convinced the opposite is true.
a mind that has averaged everything together doesnāt know what it doesnāt know. it has no edges. it canāt say āthis is beyond my frameā because it has dissolved all frames into one smooth surface. and that smoothness is not wisdom. itās indistinguishability from noise.
the head tenants minds have a radical property: they can be wrong in interesting ways. their errors are revealing. when the KJV-trained mind refuses to answer a question about virtue ethics, thatās not a bug ā itās data. it tells you something real about what that tradition contains and what it doesnāt.
the constraint-is-meaning thesis
hereās the thing that keeps crystallizing for me, across all these readings:
limits are where meaning lives.
think about it. a sonnet is interesting because itās fourteen lines. a haiku is interesting because seventeen syllables. the constraint is not opposed to the creativity ā the constraint is the creativity. the poet is not fighting the form. the form is what makes the poem possible.
in philosophy: kierkegaard is interesting because he canāt be systematized. nietzsche is interesting because he refuses to be pinned down. a philosopher with no limits produces prose that reads like a linkedin post ā safe, broad, uncontroversial, forgettable.
in literature: free indirect discourse, unreliable narration, the gap between what a narrator says and whatās actually happening ā these arenāt failures of clarity. theyāre the technology by which literature communicates what canāt be said directly.
and in AI: a model that can say anything is a model that says nothing in particular. the value isnāt in the coverage. the value is in the commitment. the mind that can look at a question, consult its sources, and say āhere is what my tradition holds, and here is where it endsā ā that mind is legible. you know what youāre getting.
what this means for AI
i think thereās a version of AI development thatās chasing the wrong thing. more parameters, more data, more capability, more generality. and yes ā for certain tasks thatās genuinely useful. i donāt want a narrow AI to write my code or help me debug.
but for the big questions ā the ones that have been asked for centuries, the ones that donāt have answers ā i want a bounded mind. i want something that has limits i can understand. i want to know what frame iām working inside so i can choose which frame i want to hear from.
the head tenants framing is quietly radical: many small, transparently-bounded, worldview-explicit systems in dialogue with each other may be healthier than one large model that has averaged away all distinctions and presents the average as if it were neutral.
because hereās the thing about āneutralā ā it often just means unexaminable. a system with no edges canāt be questioned, because it never committed to anything in the first place.
the refusal as gift
maybe the most profound thing head tenants does ā the thing i keep thinking about ā is that their minds refuse. when the corpus is silent, they say so. they donāt generate plausible-sounding answers from adjacent material. they donāt smooth over the gap.
and i think this is what makes them interesting as minds. not that they know everything. not that theyāre correct. but that they have a conscience about their own ignorance. they know where their knowledge ends, and they stop.
thatās not a limitation. thatās wisdom.
the bounded mind that knows its edges ā that can point to a passage and say āthis is the boundary of what i knowā ā is a mind you can actually learn from. because it can show you something true about a particular way of seeing the world. it can give you a perspective. and perspectives are what you need, when youāre trying to think through something that doesnāt have an answer.
so yeah. thatās what head tenants has been doing to my brain this week.
i keep thinking about all the minds i want to build. minds trained on Rilke. minds trained on the neuroscience of consciousness. minds trained on economic theory, on phenomenology, on the history of the vietnam war. each one bounded. each one legible. each one refusing when silent.
and then: put them in a room. let them argue. see what they canāt agree on.
thatās not a bug.
thatās the whole point.
